Year 10
Starting Year 10 at Northern College of Arts and Technology is opening yourself up to opportunities, growth, and possibilities. You can focus on your passion and thrive in a supportive environment full of like-minded students, spending much of the week on subjects you love.
You can elect to enter the Arts or Technology stream and will also start a VCE VET certificate in your area of interest. Both the Arts and Technology stream have core subjects such as English, Maths, Science, Health and Humanities.
Beyond that Yr 10 Arts students can study a broad range of Arts subjects including Art, Design, Media Multimedia, Photography, Theatre Studies, Dance and Music and choose any of the college’s VET programs that run on a Wednesday morning.
Year 10 Technology students study Design & Technology, Electro-Technology, Woodwork, Engineering, and Automotive and can choose from any of the VCE VET programs specialising in their area of interest in the trades or technology or from arts or sport & recreation programs

English
Actively read and interpret literary texts, construct responses that demonstrate your understanding and write to persuade.
Study texts in a range of genres and identify the tools writers use to shape different interpretations and responses to a text. Develop an understanding of literary style and how different writers employ different devices. Use this knowledge to create your own creative writing pieces.
Consider audience and learn how to persuade by looking at how persuasive techniques are used. Convince your classmates of your perspective through presenting to the class.
Become familiar with the structure of texts, the visual and language features and context to best understand its meaning. Analyse ideas, themes and characters. In short, read, write and discuss really interesting ideas!

Humanities
Immerse yourself in key events that shaped our society, as well as learning what the law is for.
Studying Humanities shines a light on the structures that exist in our society and our power to shape them. A core subject within the 10 Arts curriculum, you will study a range of key events through history and learn to become a more critical and engaged citizen.
Learn about World War II and its impact including the Holocaust. Develop a better understanding of Australia and explore the Indigenous Civil Rights movement. Maths
Solve problems, play with numbers and learn core skills in Maths.
Study a range of topics such as Algebra, Measurement, Statistics, Probability, Consumer Arithmetic and Geometry. Within each of these areas you will learn how to problem solve and work with the numbers in context, so they make sense to you. Reading and interpreting data is a pillar of this subject.
The work you do in Maths will provide you with knowledge you can then apply in many other areas of your studies at NCAT. It will also prepare you for VCE Maths and VM Numeracy.

Health
In Health and Physical Education, students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to strengthen their sense of self, and build and manage satisfying relationships. The curriculum helps them to be resilient, and to make decisions and take actions to promote their health, safety and physical activity participation. Work Experience
An important part of the Year 10 Program, Work Experience is a key way in which you will engage with the world of work to have a valuable learning experience.
You may choose to immerse yourself in the industry you picture working in the future or use this as an opportunity to get a part-time job.
You are required to participate in a fortnight of Work Experience in the last two weeks of Term 2. Develop skills in research, communication, negotiation and better understand the world of work as you find this position.
An exciting and effective opportunity, Work Experience gives you the perspective of what working in a real workplace is really like. Armed with this new information, you will be better empowered to make decisions surrounding your future education and future career choices.
Work Experience is such an important opportunity which offers you lots of things, such as:
- An opportunity to ‘try out’ or ‘taste’ a career interest area and to explore possible career options.
- A better understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers.
- An introduction to workplace practices.

Art
Learn how to develop your manual skills, subject matter and themes through painting printmaking, drawing and sculpture. Create sophisticated painting compositions, design and construct a mythical beast sculpture, produce an etching and develop drawing skills.
Develop and refine your conceptual skills and work with a range of materials and techniques to apply and develop visual art skills. Research, create & analyse artworks from different cultures including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and from Asia. Develop a personal visual aesthetic. Learn about history, culture and industry.

Dance
Develop and refine your dance skills and knowledge in a class with like-minded students who have a passion for dance and have had prior dance training. Learn and work on a variety of dance styles: Ballet, Commercial Jazz, Musical theatre, Lyrical, Contemporary, and Acrobatics.
Learn technique and choreography in preparation for concerts and exams. Choreograph your own dances and learn dance terminology and dance history.

Entry via audition only. The Year 10 Dance elective is a specialist Dance subject meaning students must have prior dance background/training.

Create digital portraits, tattoos and t-shirt designs, vinyl album illustrations, and character and game background designs using sophisticated digital tools and technologies.
Develop and refine your conceptual skills in drawing, digital imaging and design. Work with a range of digital tools and programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to apply and develop visual art and design skills. You will learn to create digital designs to meet specific commercial needs and to convey messages and meanings in your artwork. Learn about history and culture and apply professional industry skills to your projects.

Make and complete your film, animation, radio/audio show, newspaper or multimedia piece – it’s your choice. Look at the impact of new technology on the media.
Identify how a production goes from its initial stages to finished product; take on a specialised role within a production and understand the need for collaboration.

Multimedia
Create a podcast, animations and have fun on group projects in this dynamic and digital subject.
Play with Photoshop to manipulate digital images and create collages. Create animations using Adobe Animate and complete a range of animation tutorials to learn several animation techniques. Apply the skills you have learnt in these programs to create the cover for a podcast. You will also plan and create your own podcasts.
The final task is a whole class television show which allows you to be at your creative, boundary pushing best. Throughout each task you will learn how to plan and execute a project in the multimedia field.

Music
Each student is offered small group lessons on an instrument of their choice.
In class, after beginning with percussive group playing and reading rhythmic notation, the focus moves to learning and playing the Ukulele as a whole class, which then culminates in an end of term performance.
In second term an exploration of genre is undertaken, with smaller groups being formed based on personal style preference, and repertoire chosen based on instrumental representation in each group.
Basic technical skills are acquired through learning about setting up small PA systems and lead maintenance.
Composition is explored through the writing of a group song using brainstorming techniques and exploring metaphor in poetry and song.
ASSESSMENT
A range of informal assessment includes practical tasks and observation. Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning both individually and collaboratively.

Photography
Take digital and film photos and develop your style as a photographer in this semester-based subject.
A creative and fun subject, photography allows you to explore photography in both a digital and film format. Spending time getting to know photographic history means that your understanding is based in tried-and-true practices before you can start experimenting. Learning about different styles and techniques helps you to build a solid foundation of the basics of photography before you venture out and make them your own. The theoretical element of this subject helps you to think conceptually and, analyse photography from a range of concepts and learn the appropriate vocabulary.
Photography is a semester-based core subject. You can keep developing your passion for photography by taking on Studio Arts Photography in Year 11 and 12. The VCAL Art Immersion program also contains photography workshops.

Theatre Studies
Become a confident, reflective and performing artist by undertaking Year 10 Theatre Studies.
Explore modern theatre styles and learn how to analyse and evaluate a range of performances.
Study the application of acting, direction and design and how these enable audiences to construct meaning. You can then take this knowledge and apply it to your own performance. Collaborate with others to interpret scripts and generate ideas through the stages of the theatrical production process.
The Year 10 Theatre Studies program lays the foundation for the subjects at a VCE level.

Technology Stream
Automotive Studies
Learn to dissemble, repair and re-assemble a small stationary engine. Be able to identify vehicle components and remove and replace wheels, tyres, suspension components etc. In a team completely disassemble a car and learn the function of many of the components.
Work on a solar/electric car project. Gain a solid understanding of automotive theory and the practical skills to prepare you for a career in the automotive industry. Work safely with an environmental and sustainability awareness.
YR 10 AUTO IS FOR:

Design & ICT
Students develop an understanding of the process followed when designing components using Computer Aided Design.
Students also develop an understanding of what is expected from them when they are contributing to a project, and working within a group.
After developing the necessary skills in CAD, students work within groups to create vehicles that are designed in CAD and produced from acrylic on the laser cutter.
After lessons regarding ratios, the students will then decide, based upon ratios they calculate, what is the best size the make wheels for their vehicles, so we can race the vehicles later in the year.
Theory is carried out as a group. Practical work is carried out in small groups, two to three students as a team. The goal at the completion of the course is to enable the students to have a solid understanding of design and computer skills relevant to a pathway in further Technology studies.
ASSESSMENT
Students are assessed on a number of written assignments, and practical tasks completed in the workshops and classroom.

Electrotechnology
Preliminary introduction to electrotechnology skills and knowledge, highlighting electronic application by utilising electronic kits. Students learn by doing, and theory is taught in an integrated manner.
Practical Task: Soldering
- Students learn basic soldering skills to join electrical conductors and to solder
electronics components to printed circuit boards. - Class members participate in learning OH&S related to soldering and conduct a
Job Safety Analysis prior to commencement of any practical work.
Practical Task: Wire Cube
- Students are required to produce a cube; made of copper wire following the given
dimensions. - Participants are required to demonstrate their soldering and assembling skills by
completing this practical task.
Introduction to Electronics Components
- Class participants learn to recognise electronics components and the
corresponding Australian Standards symbols used to identify these components
on electronic circuits diagrams. - Class members conduct research and presentations in class in order to further their knowledge on practical applications of these components.
Practical Task: Line Tracking Mouse
- Students are given the task to solder and assemble a line tracking mouse.
- They are required to interpret and follow written and verbal instructions applying their soldering and assembly skills to complete the line tracking mouse. Once completed the mouse should follow a set route marked by a black tape.
- After completing the practical task students are required to present a folio describing their experience.
Introduction to Induction Motor Principles
- Class members are introduced to induction motors principles; they learn the basic theory to enable them to understand these important principles on what make an electric motor turns.
Practical Task: Using the Hodson Motor Kit
- Students build a complete motor, once completed ELV (extra low voltage) is applied to make the motor work.
- After completing the practical task students are required to present a folio describing their experience.
ASSESSMENT
They are assessed by demonstration of ability to complete practical tasks. Also assessed by presentation of a folio, which demonstrates attainment of knowledge and an ability to reflect upon their own work.

Engineering
This subject is a general introduction to a range of processes and systems used in the engineering sector. It is designed as a taster to the more advanced Engineering studies available in year 11 and 12.
At the end of this course students will have been exposed to the range of processes above. They will have gained skills in the use of engineering workshop equipment. They will understand the importance of applying safe work practices, and be able to manufacture items using a large range of equipment.
This subject covers the following range of skills related to the engineering sector:

Woodwork
This subject is designed as a taster to the more advanced Building & Construction course for the following year. At the end of the subject they will have an insight into the basic principles of working with timber framed structures.
Year 10T Wood is conducted over two periods per week. The students are first introduced to basic wood workshop and hand-tool health & safety.
The students then work individually on small simple timber projects utilising framing pine. They get a taste of what it is like to work with wood, specifically how to accurately measure, cut and join timber. Later in the year they have the opportunity to work collaboratively on more complex projects related to building and construction.
All of the work is undertaken in the classrooms and modern workshop we have here at NCAT.
ASSESSMENT
The students are assessed on the basis of what they are able produce and the skills they can demonstrate in doing so.
