Automotive Technology

Get your hands dirty while learning everything that happens under the bonnet of car and makes them run. Work with cars and start your career in the auto industry buy completing the Certificate II in Automotive. Explore career options in the auto industry. Learn how to repair or replace key components of the car so you are job ready by the time you finish the course.
You will be doing all these things in a simulated workplace, but you will also learn to write and talk about them when trying to impress a prospective employer to gain an apprenticeship.
Early career starts are available for VCE and VCAL students seeking a career in automotive technology. Students can integrate a VET certificate in automotive technology within a VCE or VCAL syllabus. Practical exercises include removing and replacing cylinder head gaskets, carrying out basic electrical repairs, removing and replacing radiators, repairs to cooling systems, repairs and working on brakes, changing the clutch on a car, removing and refitting transmissions, changing front and rear springs, plus learning many basics and fundamentals of motor vehicle repair and service operation.

VET
Course Structure
The VCE VET program provides students with knowledge, skills and competency to increase their employment prospects and future training pathways in the automotive industry. The course gives students a nationally recognised certificate and helps them make an informed choice entering the automotive industry. The course covers competencies at work entry level including basic safety and basic skills and knowledge for work in the automotive sector.
During the course students perform a large variety of the basic repairs employers ask an apprentice to carry out.
The course is very hands on but there is some theory and written work for the knowledge component of the qualification. How to complete various types of workplace documentation and how to apply safe work practices are covered.
Practical repairs and maintenance tasks assessed by observation and questioning, and written tasks are all assessed using set criteria. Students are given a fair and adequate assessment process that includes multiple opportunities to demonstrate competency. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 80 hours of Structured Workplace Learning.

Dance

Refine your dance technique across a range of styles while making a contribution to your ATAR. Take your first steps towards being a professional performer or dance teacher with the Certificate II in Dance. Participate in a range of workshops and learn from industry professionals in the styles of jazz and contemporary. You will develop a strong work ethic you are prepared for the industry.
A career in dance is possible as a performer, manager or dance teacher. Students can integrate a VET certificate in Dance within a VCE or VCAL syllabus. Students can also study VCE Dance.
Progressing from basic dance skills to specialising in a range of contemporary dance styles, explore rehearsal techniques, performances, choreography and manage all aspects of a professional dancer’s career. Learn to look after your body, work as a team and manage large events. Become an integral member of an award winning dance team.

Dance enables you to:
/Perform and choreograph different dance pieces.
/Build your network in the dance industry.
/Source and apply entertainment industry knowledge.
/Prepare for a career as a dance teacher, professional dancer, or choreographer.

Beyond live performances, dancers can gain employment across several industries as event managers, teachers or choreographers. NCAT consults with industry and government reference groups to keep abreast of changes and emerging employment skills in contemporary dance and entertainment. Our facilities include two fully equipped dance studios.


Course Structure
This course enables students to develop knowledge and skills to participate in a variety of dance routine roles. It provides fundamental skills in a number of specialised dance disciplines. This is also a VCE VET subject and students gain a scored assessment for their ATAR as one of their primary four scaled studies or a 10% contribution to their ATAR score.
Tasks to cover the training package content may include: dance styles learnt Jazz and Contemporary; performances, competitions and showcases; theory classes.
Assessments involves a variety of methods including short answer oral and written questions, performances, responses to scenarios, and observation in class. The assessment of overall competence at this certificate level will be undertaken by a qualified assessor and competence judged using set criteria in the qualification. All training resources will be provided upon payment and enrolment.
Students undertaking scored assessment are required to complete set coursework tasks and a performance examination.
Students will be given a fair and adequate assessment process that includes multiple opportunities to demonstrate competency.
Students enrolling in Certificate II in Dance must be physically able to undertake the qualification. They need the basic literacy and numeracy skills required to undertake a certificate level qualification. Students must attend an audition.
Building & Construction

Early career starts are available for VCE and VCAL students seeking a career in Building and Construction. Students can integrate a VET certificate in Building and Construction within a VCE or VCAL syllabus.
Using a combination of laser levels and electronic tape measures, learn how to survey a block of land to set out an L-shaped house. Develop planning interpretation skills. Construct small-scale subflooring, wall frames, roof trusses and wall cladding. Understand how current OHS regulations are applied to the safe operation of power tools and hand equipment.

Building & Construction enables you to:

The building and construction trade is in high-demand nationwide. Qualified tradesmen are in short supply. Recent years have seen a shift in industry and consumer demand for sustainable building and construction practices, along with advances in Occupational Health and Safety requirements.


Course Structure
This course is a partial completion of the Certificate with 8 core units related to the building industry and 12 elective units introducing carpentry. It covers basic knowledge in safety and basic carpentry and building skills to prepare students for work in the building trades.
During the course, students will be able to activities and tasks that may include: basic building concepts, theory and terminology; using hand and power tool skills for various carpentry team and individual projects; timber construction projects eg.saw horses, dog house & small portable or fixed dwelling; working safely in the construction industry; calculations for the building industry; levelling; first aid.
Practical project work assessed by observation and questioning, and written tasks are all assessed using set criteria. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 80 hours of Structured Workplace Learning.
Students will be given a fair and adequate assessment process that includes multiple opportunities to demonstrate competency.

Create

This unique part-time visual art course is designed to expand your creative skills through art studio practices, drawing, digital imaging and contemporary art practices.
NCAT Create’s trainers are all practising creative professionals. Through practical workshops and mentoring, they will provide advice and support to encourage you as an emerging artist. This is a two-year part-time Diploma of Visual Arts for adults seeking creative direction in the creative industries.

Create enables you to:

Course Structure
This qualification reflects the role of individuals who combine specialised technical, creative and conceptual skills to plan and realise a body of work in one or more art forms. Practice at this level is underpinned by application of arts theory and history and the ability to critically analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources. Discourse around complex ideas is also required. Visual Artists may work in their own practice or in a range of contexts across the arts, government, community or commercial organisations.

The course consists of visual arts based practical, theory and workshop sessions. Units of competency are delivered within subjects. Activities involve the submission of art projects, participation in group discussions, critiques and a review of the art portfolios produced. Other tasks include attendance and participation in: practical workshops, demonstrations, presentations, exhibition/gallery visits, creating an online website, self-evaluation exercises and questionnaires. Learning and assessment takes place in a professional, structured studio-based environment in a variety of contexts using a range of strategies to meet different learner needs.
Assessment tasks are designed to be flexible and relevant to emerging artists and include, portfolio of evidence, direct observation of set tasks, knowledge-based self-assessment and testing of practical knowledge through set art projects. Learning and assessment are integrated, with assessment evidence being collected and feedback provided to the student regularly throughout the process.
Candidates need technical and organisational skills to conceptualise and create art works in selected media. These skills may have been acquired through creative practice or through formal study. Students must compete a LLN test and be assessed competent at exit Level 3. Students must show a desire for genuine pathway based outcomes from the course. Electrotechnology

Prepare yourself to gain an apprenticeship or employment by completing a range of project-based tasks. A practical project-based curriculum simulates real world scenarios for hands-on student learning. VET
Course Structure
This course prepares students to gain an apprenticeship or other employment in the electrotechnology industry. It covers the fundamentals of electrical, telecommunication, refrigeration and air conditioning systems as well as workshop experience in fabrication and assembly techniques, wiring, cabling, basic installation skills and use of test equipment. Workplace safety and first aid training are also included.
It provides an overview of the industry, employment opportunities and training pathways. The training is mainly project based and gives industry relevant hands-on experience in a realistic simulated environment. The course gives you the basic skills to make you job ready. You will learn to use basic hand and power tools and equipment an electrician/technician uses and how to read circuit diagrams, take electrical measurements and perform electrical calculations.
The theoretical and practical training is linked directly to the work electrotechnology related technicians undertake. The course includes: basic electrical/electronic theory; renewable energy concepts and projects (solar and wind); electricmotor theory and practice (motor control); data and network cabling; testing instruments; air-conditioning basics.
A combination of project based practical tasks and job briefs assessed by observation and questioning and written tasks and theory tests are all assessed using set criteria. Students are given a fair and adequate assessment process that includes multiple opportunities to demonstrate competency. Engineering Studies

Balance the design and planning elements with learning how to use industry standard tools in a purpose-built workshop created for this exact purpose. Manage engineering based projects, undertake processes and learn the industry you are about to enter, inside and out.
Early career starts are available for VCE and VCAL students seeking a career in engineering. Students can integrate a VET certificate in Engineering within a VCE or VCAL syllabus. Develop skills in machining, fabrication and the safe use of power tools. Use computer controlled lathes (CNC), lasers, and computer aided drafting (CAD) to create projects and your own equipment for use in the trade. A major project is completed at the end of the units 3+4 study.

Engineering Studies enables you to:
/Develop the skills to work with a range of equipment and tools.
/Produce engineering components.
/Undertake a major product and document the process.
/Make vice soft jaws, a sheet metal tool caddy, centre punch, soft face mallet or an engineer’s square.


Recent years have seen a shift in industry demand for fields such as engineering, manufacturing, automation, control technologies, mechatronics, electrotechnology, robotics, and energy management.

Course Structure
This is a project-based, hand-on course delivered in a simulated workplace environment in a fully- equipped workshop. The course provides students with the skills and knowledge to pursue an apprenticeship in the engineering trades or with a foundation for professional engineering roles. Units 1 & 2 cover areas in computer technology and using hand and power tools.
We deliver a general qualification including some elective units from fabrication, machining and engineering technical pathways. Units 3 & 4 offers scored assessment and incorporates units such as producing basic engineering sketches and drawings, handling engineering materials, performing computations (for the VCE stream only).

Projects made in Units 1 & 2 include vice soft jaws, sheet metal tool caddy, centre punch, soft face mallet and an engineer’s square. Students doing Units 3 & 4 are required to construct a major project and document the project in a portfolio.
Students wanting a study score for the Engineering certificate can undertake scored assessment. Practical project work is assessed by observation and questioning, written tasks and tests are assessed using set criteria. Students are given a fair and adequate assessment process with multiple opportunities to demonstrate competency. Students must attend 80% of all classes and successfully complete all units of competency to obtain their certificate II qualification.

Course Structure
This qualification reflects the role of practitioners working at a pre-professional level who are beginning to develop their own creative voice. They produce work that shows proficiency with techniques in their chosen field and are able to apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems. They have broad and integrated factual, technical and theoretical knowledge with cognitive skills that allow them to analyse, compare and act on information from a range of sources.

Delivery is via weekly practical, theory and workshop sessions. Units of competency are clustered and embedded within the course subjects and are delivered over the course of the full year. Activities are based on the submission of projects of set workplace tasks or projects, participation in-group discussions, and a final presentation on the implementation and outcomes of specified projects. As well as completing individual job briefs, participants must attend & participate in: practical workshops, tests, demonstrations, lectures, presentations, excursions, exhibition/gallery visits, the creation of an online blog/website/portfolio, oral presentations, “mock” interviews, self-evaluation exercises, podcasts, online tuition, questionnaires & surveys.
Learning and assessment is integrated, with assessment evidence being collected and feedback provided to the student on an ongoing basis. Structured core and elective subjects cover a variety of contexts using a range of strategies to meet different learner needs. These include: group-based, work-based, project-based, self-paced, action learning-based; e-learning; and involve practice and experience in a simulated work environment. The Job Briefs for each subject outline tasks to be completed, the competencies to be demonstrated and the practical outcomes to be produced. Units of Competency are clustered in the NCAT Folio Preparation course subjects and are delivered over the course of the full year. As with all good design and creativity, this craft begins with drawing and identifying construction methods and working within constraints. Master the art of hand-cut timber joints using industry standard hand-tools, power-tools and multi-cam computer controlled cutters.
Course Structure
This course is for people interested in a career in furnishing, cabinet making or related working environment. Students learn and develop a range of skills and knowledge including furniture assembly, joinery and preparation of surfaces which can help get entry into an apprenticeship. This is a project- based, hand-on course delivered in a simulated workplace environment in a fully-equipped workshop.
Competencies cover construction of furniture products using a variety of materials, a range of hand and power tools, surface preparation, general joinery techniques and assembly of various components such as drawers, leg and rail, tops or carcass. Safety, industry standards, job specifications, reading plans, measurements and calculations are competencies relating to communication and teamwork skills and are vital to produce a successful product.
Assessment is mainly by observation of skills and some written work and assignments. The assessment of your overall competence at this certificate level will be undertaken by a qualified assessor and your competence judged using the criteria stated in the qualification.

Recent years have seen a growth in industry demand for sound engineers, producers, mixers and Foley artists skilled in digital technology. Beyond the music industry, employment is also possible across film, television, gaming and digital device sectors.
The course strongly focuses on providing students with a broad skill set that will enable them a wide range of employment opportunities within the music industry. The College consults with industry and government reference groups to ensure our curriculum remains consistent with emerging trends. Purpose built facilities demonstrate sustainable practices, furnished with a fully equipped recording studio, digital audio workstations and multi media labs.
Students are able to record using some of the finest equipment that you would normally only find in professional recording studios. This includes:
- Music recital room with a Kawai grand piano.
- Ten music rehearsal rooms.
- Two computer labs, each equipped with twenty-five music workstations comprising Arturia keyboards, Arrow audio interfaces, Apple iMacs with Pro Tools, Ableton Live and other audio & music programs installed.
- Two purpose built dance studios with sprung floors.

Course Structure
This qualification provides students with foundation knowledge and skills of the music industry and a great pathway into the Certificate III Music qualification. The NCAT course covers a broad range of skills including music rehearsal and performance techniques; basic sound recording processes, planning and creating compositional work, maintaining instruments, and planning, staging and performing at events.
Students complete as individuals but there is also strong emphasis on group activity which includes: singing or playing simple musical pieces for group performances; rehearsing and performing; using and maintaining instruments; using software to record and compose; planning and performing at events; applying Occupational Health and Safety processes across all aspects of music making.
Assessment methods include oral and written presentations, performances, projects, worksheets, tests, practical demonstrations and participating in discussions. The assessment of your overall competence at this certificate level is undertaken by a qualified assessor and your competence judged using all of these criteria. All training resources will be provided. Students will be given a fair and adequate assessment process that includes the option of reassessment where appropriate.

Of the 12 units in Certificate IV in Music at NCAT, Rebecca Barnard teaches four of the units including Stagecraft, Songwriting, Performance - and her remarkable unit called ‘Backing Beck’ is perhaps the most important, because the students get first-hand experience of being in a successful band.
Most assessment tasks are project based and culminate in the production of folios of work. Students participate in a number of public performances and a performance tour; and they produce a folio of compositions, musical transcriptions, performance reviews and demo recordings. The assessment of students’ overall competence will be undertaken by qualified assessors. Students’ competence will be judged using a set of nationally determined criteria. The assessment process will be fair and will include the option of re-sits.
To be eligible for entry into this course, applicants must have completed a VCE, VCAL Senior or Year 12 equivalent. A Certificate III in Music Industry would be an advantage. Entry into this course is by audition and interview. Applicants are asked to prepare two contrasting works for audition. The use of backing tracks in auditions is encouraged. Mature age applicants welcome.

This course focuses on exploring genre, building stagecraft, writing original compositions and performing live at multiple school events. A major performance will be organised by the students as a culmination of the year’s work. This course has a scored assessment for ATAR purposes at Unit 3 & 4 levels.
Students complete a broad range of activities including but not limited to: collaborative songwriting and re-interpreting popular music; opportunity to perform in various ensembles across multiple genres; planning, preparing and promoting a gig as part of a group; improvisation and stagecraft techniques; music language and critical listening; opportunity to record original music in the NCAT recording studio; WHS for music practice and performance; copyright and contracts for performers and songwriters.
The assessment involves a variety of methods including observations, written and oral questioning, reviews and practical demonstrations. The assessment of your overall competence at this certificate level is undertaken by a qualified assessor and your competence judged using all of the relevant criteria.

Sound Production students study audio theory and apply their knowledge in practical and diverse learning environments working closely with colleagues as clients. They gain practical experience in live sound production, become familiar with microphone types and use them in a variety of recording contexts. Sound Production students develop recording plans and run recording sessions in the recording studios using current technologies and software. They record, edit and produce multitrack recordings to a professional standard using Pro Tools. Sound Production students also develop their skills as performers and are given opportunities to perform and record their own songs and contribute to, and record those of their colleagues.

Recording and mixing live sound are the major focus areas of the course. Students are given multiple opportunities to set up and operate live audio for concerts and other events. Multiple digital audio workstations are available for students to develop skills in recording programs. Students gain skills required to work creatively and effectively in the music industry. This course has a scored assessment for ATAR purposes at units 3 & 4 level.
Students complete a broad range of activities including but not limited to: setting up and operating live sound equipment and mixing for events such as the annual music festival and school musical; setting up, recording and mixing music in an industry standard recording studio; recording, mixing, mastering and producing for a range of bands and artists; installing and programming of lighting systems; investigating methods and techniques used in recording bands and artists; planning, preparing and promoting music and other events.
Units of competency are assessed using a variety of methods including practical observation, written and research tasks and case studies.

Musical Instrument Making & Repair

There are opportunities in the guitar making industry in Victoria and with independent makers nationally. NCAT consults with industry and has established relationships with Maton Guitars, Cole Clark Guitars & many independent instrument makers. The college also has a relationship the Australian Music Association (the National Retailer’s Association).
The Certificate IV students learn to make a bolt-on electric guitar and a dreadnaught style acoustic guitar. Upon successful completion of these instruments, students design and may construct a custom made instrument of their choice. The college will provide the materials to build your own custom built instrument. The hardware must be supplied by the student. The course covers an introduction to the computer controlled cutting and milling machines and laser cutters. Students are instructed in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools necessary for construction and gain vital hands-on experience.

Musical Instrument Making & Repair enables you to:

Students begin by completing an extensive OH&S program, incorporating theory and workshop induction. Over the year, students learn to make a bolt-on neck electric guitar, a dreadnaught style acoustic guitar and design a custom instrument of their choice. The course covers hand carving and the use and maintenance of hand and power tools necessary for construction, and gives vital hands-on experience.

The Certificate IV program is delivered over four days a week by a team of highly experienced teaching staff. A variety of guest speakers present to students throughout the year on specialist topics. In recent years this has included professionals such as, Ian Noyce, Jack Spira, Ruben Becker, Andy Thomson (T Guitars), Jeremy Clingan, Benedict Stewart and David Searle. Tours to industry locations, including Maton Guitars Australia and Cole Clark Guitars are an integral part of the course. As a professional component of the program, students are given the opportunity to complete a five day work placement with one of our industry partners. This is organised by NCAT. This training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth government funding.
The program is delivered as a “hands on” model, with an emphasis on experiential learning.
Subjects include: Instrument Construction, Repair & Setup, Design & Documentation, 3D Modelling Technology, Business Planning and Occupational Health & Safety
Successful completion of the course requires 95% attendance. Students will be required to complete two instruments and all set work as well as the work placement. The assessment of overall competence at this certificate level will be undertaken by a qualified assessor and your competence judged using all of these criteria. All training resources will be provided upon payment and enrolment.
There are no prerequisites but completion of 22563VICCertificate III in Musical Instrument Making & Maintenance would be an advantage.

Course Structure
The Certificate III program is an introductory course that is delivered as part of VET in Schools and is only available to secondary schools students. This is delivered one day a week (Wednesdays) over two years, incorporating a range of woodcraft skills necessary for building percussion instruments, ukuleles, slide guitars, as well as an introduction to basic woodwind repair. If enrolled as a fulltime secondary students at NCAT the Certificate III can be integrated with the VCE or VCAL syllabus.
After an extensive OH&S program, combining theory and workshop induction, students will build an electric guitar neck, percussion instrument(stomp box, cajonand xylophone), make basic woodwind instruments and an electric slide guitar. In second year the students build a tenor ukulele, a travel mandolin and a solid body electric guitar. Students learn to repair a drum kit and a clarinet. After completing all assigned tasks students are encouraged to bring in personal projects and learn the basics of guitar set up and repair.
The course runs over two years. In first year you complete two instruments and an introductory piece. In second year you complete two instruments and various instrument repairs.The applied nature of the course requires 98% attendance to successfully complete. The assessment of your overall competence is undertaken by a qualified assessor and competence judged using all of these completed tasks. Students will be given a fair and adequate assessment process that includes multiple opportunities to demonstrate competency.

Our subjects group units of competency to provide students with skills and knowledge for the Photographic industry. The main aim is to produce a portfolio of work specialised to the student’s needs demonstrating a high level of conceptual research and technical competence and refinement.

Activities include photographic exercises incorporating workplace tasks or projects, job briefs, and the production of a photographic portfolio. Students must attend and participate in practical workshops, demonstrations, excursions, presentations, group discussions and self-evaluation exercises.

Subjects cover a variety of concepts and genres using a range of methods to suit different learner needs. The course covers the knowledge and skills to prepare students for an entry into an apprenticeship. There is a strong practical focus. A range of units introduces students to basic plumbing knowledge and skills and the opportunity to develop skills for the industry in the plumbing workshop. There is a strong emphasis on sustainability and safe plumbing principles.
During the course, students will be able to complete projects that include: sheet metalwork; plumbing fixtures and fittings for domestic and commercial applications; technical drawing and plumbing specifications; levelling; water, sanitary and drainage pipes used in plumbing.

Units 3 & 4 (Second Year)
Tasks to cover the training package content may include: a 30 second animation completed to technical specifications, including advanced character development with a sound effect or music soundtrack accompanied by a production folio; a promotional website using copy suited to the style. Students seek trainer feedback to make improvements and test before a set deadline; produce a portfolio for an instructional video with evidence of pre-production of visual design components and finished pieces, storyboard, script, and short answers about video production.
Assessment includes short and long answers to questions, product assessment, observation and evidence of planning such as storyboards, sketches presented in a production folio. The assessment of overall competence at this certificate level is undertaken by a qualified assessor and students’ competence judged using criteria from the unit of competencies.
In Units 1 & 2, students complete a range of exercises to demonstrate their competency.
In Units 3 & 4, students are required to complete three tasks assessed as two products and one portfolio. The three tasks cover all the competencies in Certificate III in Media for Units 3 & 4.
Students will be given a fair and adequate assessment process that includes multiple opportunities to demonstrate competency.

Screen & Media (Video)

Take your first step into the media industry as you immerse yourself in the production process of planning, creating and editing a range of media products.
Become a media maker from the moment you begin the Certificate III in Screen and Media (Video). Create short films, podcasts, whole class projects in the television genre, short stories and social media profiles all whilst become familiar with the media industry. Work with others, develop your technical skills and cultivate your critical eye.

Course Structure
In the Video stream of the CUA31020 students develop skills in the area of film, audio and online. Students undertake practices to create creative individual and collaborative media products.
Units 1 & 2 (First Year)
Students complete varied tasks to cover the qualification criteria which may include: planning and recording of a short film; sound and audio editing leading to the production of podcasts; research on the industry and current trends, careers and professional development; collecting and organising content to create a media product for screen or audio.
Units 3 & 4 (Second Year)
Students complete varied tasks to cover the qualification criteria which may include: writing content in response to a pitch; social media strategy for a person or product; develop skills of presentation and production techniques; planning and recording of a television show; creating a short film –how to, tutorial genre.
The assessment involves a variety of methods including product assessment, observation and evidence of planning and production, like storyboards.It may also involve written responses. Sport & Recreation

Jump into your career as a coach or fitness instructor within your favourite area of sport by enrolling in Certificate III in Sport and Recreation. Train, coach and instruct others in a variety of sports and develop your own fitness as you participate in a range of sports as you are trained by fellow students.
Students develop their leadership skills and knowledge to safely and effectively plan, conduct, officiate, coach and participate in a range of sport and recreation sessions. These may include volleyball, Australian Rules football, soccer, indoor hockey, indoor cricket, netball, basketball, fitness circuits etc. Learn about current First Aid and OHS practices so you are ready to enter the industry as soon as you are done.

Sport & Recreation enables you to:
/Assist in preparing and conducting sport and recreation sessions.
/Undertake additional training and experience to pursue a range of career opportunities such as fitness instructor, sports masseuse and leisure/recreation officer.

The Sport Leadership program is suited to students who enjoy an applied learning context. Students in this program will participate in active, hands-on sports education, wholly focussed around Sport. Within the program students cover all of their numeracy skills and literacy skills by reading, writing and speaking to sport related themes.

This course is for year 10-12 students aspiring to study and work in the sport and recreation industry. Grow and play as a visual artist by working with lots of different mediums in this course. Cultivate your artistic capabilities as you work on a range of projects in different mediums. Course Structure
The Certificate II in Visual Arts is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to build skills and knowledge in Art and Design as well as to begin to prepare a portfolio for further study or entry-level positions in the creative industry. Classes are run in a simulated work environment where students follow professional practices and OH&S guidelines. It covers diverse occupations in the visual arts, craft and design industries across a wide range of specialisations and media.
Students explore a range of techniques in drawing, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and apply these skills to independent and group projects. They develop a basic knowledge of art history and the design industry through lectures, discussion and personal experience. Students regularly attend galleries, studios, and design workplaces as well as working with specialists from Melbourne’s creative community.
Students receive informal assessment during the year via teacher and peer feedback in class time and are formally assessed at end of semester evaluation interviews. Assessment is based on submission of set tasks. If all course requirements are met, students receive their certificate at the end of the course. The assessment of overall competence at this certificate level is undertaken by a qualified assessor and competence is judged using the criteria stated in the qualification.

The Visual Art Immersion program uses the Visual Arts as a language through which students communicate, investigate and express themselves. It combines the VCE VM and VET certificates to create a flexible, innovative curriculum model. Students learn in a vibrant and creative environment that focuses on the individual.

Course Structure
The course is structured to maximise creative thinking space and support artwork development. The days are not divided into separate sessions, so students can concentrate fully on their creative research and art making. Literacy and numeracy skills are mostly developed and embedded through practical application to creative projects.
For two days a week, students work on individual design processes, learning to express their ideas and achieve their artistic goals in a studio environment. Teacher mentors work with students to gradually increase their ability to manage their own skill building, time and creative output. With the focused practical days, students have sufficient time to develop their own ideas, experiment with a broad range of art forms and reach their artistic potential. Students attend exhibitions throughout Melbourne, working towards a student group exhibition in a professional gallery space at the end of each year.
For a full day each week, students are guided through technical sessions, designed to improve understanding and application of artistic tools, materials and key artistic concepts. Students learn from professional guest artists and designers in a range of settings. Students undertake at least one collaborative project, working with other students to develop and realise a shared vision. Students can elect into visual arts, design or photography Workshops.
Students learn to apply their creative skills to product design and development. They learn essential business skills such as marketing, costing materials and making a profit. Students learn to apply technology to product development to make professional-grade work, including laser cutting and 3D printing and the application of the Adobe suite. Students sell their products at the college Arts festival Couchfest and learn to maximise the worldwide market available to artists, designers and makers on the Internet.
Upon successful completion of the qualifications, students may choose to pursue further study or work in the arts.
Many Visual Arts Immersion students progress to the NCAT Folio Preparation or NCAT Photography programs. These are one-year programs aimed at building industry-related skills including training in the Adobe Suite, access to specialist elective subjects, drawing and course and careers counseling, enabling students to find out where their abilities can best be directed into a career. Over the past 25 years NCAT Folio Preparation and NCAT Photography have established relationships with all of the major TAFEs and universities.
NCAT Visual Arts Immersion graduates are guaranteed a position in these highly-respected programs, subject to interview.
